1. Overview

“Number Bingo” gives your child additional practice recognizing numerals while entertaining her with a child’s favorite game: Bingo. It is a great way to provide extra repetition for children in a large group setting.

2. Materials

To play Sight Words Number Bingo, you need Bingo cards and some chips:

  • Bingo Cards Generator
  • Bingo Chips (~20 per person)
  • Printer Paper or Cardstock (Approximately 110 lb / 200 gsm)
  • Printer
  • Use our Bingo Cards Generator to produce one Bingo Card per player, and print them out (preferably on heavy-duty cardstock paper). Enter any numbers you want your child to review in the “Custom Numbers” section. The Bingo Cards Generator also creates a Call Card for you to use when running the game.

    3. Activity

    Video: Let’s play Number Bingo!

    This activity has four different levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Mathematician. See the Math Curriculum page for guidance on when to complete each level. Generate a Sight Words Number Bingo game board and Call Card by using our Bingo Card Generator. Follow these guidelines when creating your game boards.

  • Beginner : Check 1-30 box and click “Create Bingo Cards”
  • Intermediate : Check 1-50 box and click “Create Bingo Cards”
  • Advanced : Check 1-100 box and click “Create Bingo Cards”
  • Mathematician : Check 1-200 box and click “Create Bingo Cards”
  • Place around 20 chips in front of each player and you are ready to get started. Call out the first number from the call card. If a player has the number on her game board, then instruct her to put a chip on top of that number.

    Adult: It’s a seven! If you have a seven, put a chip on top of seven on your game board.
    Child: [Puts chip on seven]

    Continue calling out numbers. The first player to fill every square in a row, column, or diagonal wins and shouts “Bingo!” (Note: the center space with the Sight Words logo is considered to be automatically filled) When a player shouts “Bingo!” ask the child to read out the five numbers. Check the numbers on the game board and the Call Card to make sure the child has one. If the child wins, then start a new round with different game boards. If the child doesn’t win, then remove all the incorrect chips from her game board and keep playing.

    For additional fun, play with more people and give a prize to the winner to add a competitive edge to your gaming.

    4. Confidence Builder

    You can make the game easier by allowing players to keep their game cards for several rounds until they familiarize themselves with the numbers. Call the numbers at a slower pace to allow players more time to read their game board.

    5. Extensions

    To make the game harder, increase the pace at which you read the words. Speeding up the pace encourages children to recognize numerals quickly.
