1. Overview

“Egyptian Card Slap” quickens your child’s ability to recognize small numbers of objects. This develops grouping capabilities that allow children to quickly assess how many objects they are dealing with (i.e. instantly recognizing the number of dots on a dice, oranges in a carton, etc.)

2. Materials

To download, right-click and select Save As.

The Sight Words Egyptian Card Slap materials are provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. Basically, you are permitted complete license to use the resources, provided you leave the attribution hallmark (our logo) on the resources. We would be happy to see the materials used in the classroom, in the home, as part of your tutoring business, or however you see fit. You do not need to contact us for permission to use the materials. We want you to use them!

3. Directions

Shuffle the Sightwords Deck of Cards. Deal two hands: one for your child and one for you. Play one card and have your child play a card. If both cards have the same number of shapes on them, slap the two cards and bring them to your side. You win a point.
Adult: [Takes seven cards from deck and gives them to her child. Takes another seven cards for herself. Place one card here. [Places card in center] Child: [Places card next to the other cards] The card is a 2 of dots and a 2 of stars [Slaps 2 of dots and 2 of stars] I won!
If the two cards don’t have the same number of shapes on them, continue playing cards and have your child play cards. Each time you play a card, take another card from the deck. Play until you have used all the cards in the deck. Go easy on your child.
Adult: [Takes two cards from deck and gives one to her child and keeps one for herself] Place one card here. [Places card in center] Child: [Places card in center] The card is an 8 of dots and 2 of stars Adult: Are they the same number? Child: No! Adult: Ok. Let’s place another card. [Places another card next to the two previous cards]

4. Questions and Answers

Q: What should I do if my child slaps two different numbered cards? A: Have your child carefully count both cards. Afterwards, keep the two cards out on the playing field and continue playing.
[The card is a 8 of hearts and 2 of hearts] Child: [Slaps 8 of hearts and 2 of hearts] I won! Adult: Uh oh! Count them both again! Child: One, two. [Counting the first card] Adult: Now count the second card! Child: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. [Counting the second card] Adult: They are not the same number!

    On page 1 of the pdf cards, the “nine” red-dot card only has 7 dots. Could this be a misprint?
