Video: Slap the numbers!

Print out the Sightwords Number Slap flashcards and arrange them in a straight line in front of your child. Say a number and then tell your child to slap the card with the same number on it. After slapping the card, have your child recite the number out loud. Show your child how it’s done before you start playing.

Adult: I’m going to say a number and then I want you
to slap the card with that number on it. Say the
number out loud. Watch me do it first.
            One.

[Slaps card with number one on it] One.
            Two.

[Slaps card with number two on it] Two.
            Now let’s play.
            One

Child: [Slaps card with number one on it] One.
Adult: Two
Child: [Slaps card with number one on it] Two.

If your child slaps the wrong card, stop her and tell her what number she slapped. Have her try again. If she slaps the wrong card again, stop her, tell her the number she slapped, and then slap the correct number. Say the correct number out loud and have her slap the correct number and say it.

Adult: One
Child: [Slaps card with number three on it] One
Adult: Oh no! You just slapped the number three.
            Try again!

Child: [Slaps card with number four on it] One
Adult: Oh no! You just slapped the number four.
            This is the number 1.
[Slaps number one]
            Now you do it.
Child: [Slaps number one] One.

4. Confidence Builder

If your child needs help completing the game, try playing with less cards. Remember to keep the cards in numerical order (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). After your child is comfortable, consider placing the cards out of numerical order (See Extensions).

5. Extensions

Once your child has mastered the basic game, try some of these variations to increase the difficulty:

  • Add more numbered flashcards to the game.
  • Scatter the numbers in front of your child (not a straight line)
  • Place the numbered flashcards out of order (i.e. 2, 10, 4, 1, 6)
