4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is there an arrow under each word in the flash cards? A: The arrow serves multiple purposes. It reminds teachers to place their index finger on the circle and move it from left to right under the word to lead the student’s eye across the word. The arrow also helps students orient the flash card and helps them remember to read from left to right. Q: How do I hold the flash cards? A: Hold the flash card so that it is directly in front of your child at your child’s eye level. When you move your finger across the arrow, make sure that it does not obstruct your child’s view of the word as this distracts attention from the words. Q: The flash cards don’t print correctly — why do they go over the edge of the paper? A: The one-to-a-page and four-to-a-page flash cards need to be printed in landscape. To do this, go to your printer settings and select “landscape” (not portrait). ↑ Top

    Hi,

I have been trying to print the quarter-page set up in multiple page set up on my printer but its unable to print. Please advise as to how i can print in multiples as i want more than 4 words per page. Looking forward to your response.

    Nadia

    ADMIN – Hi Nadia,

If you want smaller cards, I recommend using some of our game cards. The Lucky 13 cards (9 per page) and Boom! cards (8 per page) will both suit your purposes well, I think. Just ignore the numbers or graphics in the corners and focus on the words.

when you print a PDF you should be able to select an option called “multiple pages per sheet”… the document will then print either 2, 4, or 8 pages per sheet, whichever you select! Hope this helps! 🙂

Do you happen to have these sight words written on flashcards that are in short phrases….and not only in isolation??? I would LOVE a copy of that if you do!

    Thank you!!!

You can custom generate any flash cards you want. Just use the blank template, or the custom flashcard generator.

When I have a group of students – say, four or five at a kidney table – should each child have their own card in front of them, or should the teacher just have one card and hold it up for each child individually or the group? Thanks.

    ADMIN – Hi Cindy,

Either would work. I usually use just one card, because it is easier to keep the activity on track with just one card. When each child has their own stack of cards, the activity can get sidetracked if one child forgets to flip a card or gets their cards out of order, etc. There also isn’t much benefit to giving each child their own card to be worth the potential for derailment.

What is the difference between the fry set and the dolch set?

    ADMIN – Hi Rachael,

The Fry and Dolch word sets are just different groups of words. They are for the most part the same words, taught in a slightly different order. Use whatever word set that your local school district uses. Most districts use Dolch, so if in doubt – that is the best place to start.

I printed the Pre-K Dolch list on 3×5 file cards, one to a page. The only thing for my printer is to print that size I have to manually feed the cards individually. With a little practice and no distractions I got them all done fairly easily.

Your Dolch pre k sight word list prints with lower case letters as they are printed in primers. But your flash card templates have standard letters as child is taught to write at school. Which should be used for learning the sight words?

    ADMIN – Hi Bev,

Not sure I am fully understanding your question … everything on our website should be lower-case. I teach lower case to children, because when they go out in the world and start trying to decode words they see a lot more lower-case letters than upper-case. And so teaching them lower-case first gives them more opportunities to practice out in the world.

Is there a corrected set of flashcards that correct “oil” and “sit” to “am” and “its”?

Hi Glen, Thanks for stopping by. While we have updated our First 100 Fry Sight Words pdf here , I’m afraid we haven’t yet updated Pages 22 & 23 of our First 100 Flash Cards (which as you can see still include OIL & SIT). As a temporary workaround, may I suggest that you print out this entire First 100 Fry Words – Flash Cards pdf first, then Custom-print the 2 cards for AM & ITS? You can actually customize your cards on this page . First, under “Fry Sight Words”, tick the “1st 100” box. Then under “Custom Sight Words”, type “am” and “its” in two boxes. Then hit the green “Create Flash Cards” button, and you’re good to go!

Do you have flash cards for Dolch words in simple sentences? It would help students who are learning English as a second language (two per page).

ADMIN – Hi, Nada. You may have simple sentences on the flash cards for Dolch sight words. This site has examples of such in a foreign language, not just in English. We don’t have flash cards with sentences, but there are many online resources that do, such as the link shared here. Hope you find what you’re looking for!

Hi Linda, Thanks for stopping by. We are happy to help. About the print-size issue, that’s odd. Did you make sure to choose the size of card(s) that you wanted: full, half, or quarter-page? Did you check your printer properties as well? If nothing seems to check out, our suggested workaround is that you print our blank cards and just write the words in your preferred size: https://sightwords.com/pdfs/blank_sight_words_flash_cards_2up.pdf. Hope you get to find the settings you want eventually!

I was able to download lists 1 & 2 of Fry Sight Words for my first graders parents, but lists 3 & 4 keep failing saying they are too large, and when I try to open it the file says it was corrupt during email send. I am not sure what that means, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue? I don’t know why I could download lists 1 and 2 but not 3 and 4?

Hello! Thanks a lot for your great job. What do you think if I put the translation of the word on the other side of the card?

ADMIN – Hi, Natasha. It’s our pleasure to help! Interesting question as well. Do you intend the translation for your personal reminder? Are you training your child (or student) to be bilingual? As these sight words are specifically for training your child in the English language, it would really be best to design a different set of sight words flash cards per (foreign) language, wouldn’t you agree? However, if this is just a personal guide for you, that’s fine. It’s best to train the child in one language per class time though.

    • Sight Words Admin

      Hello,

You should be able to type your selected words into the blank boxes here. You’ll also see these instructions on the page: “Instructions
The Flash Card Creator creates a custom set of sight words flash cards. You can use one (or more) of the existing lists of sight words and/or use your own custom word list. To create your Flash Cards:

First, select the sight word list(s) you wish to use. Under Dolch Sight Words or Fry Sight Words or Top 150 Written Words, check the boxes corresponding to any sight words lists you want included in your Flash Cards. For example, selecting the Dolch Sight Words Kindergarten and 1st Grade lists uses those 93 words for your Flash Cards.
Under Custom Sight Words, enter in any custom words you want included in your set of Flash Cards. For example, if you are doing a unit on farm animals, you might want to add cow and pig.
Click Create Flash Cards, and your cards will be created and displayed onscreen in PDF format. You can print the cards by selecting print from your browser window.” Good luck!

I love these cards! I have been using the quarter-page custom cards for years as we work through the Fry sight words. I do an assessment, then the words that my students don’t know go onto flash cards to practice. They each have their own set, whatever words they are currently working on. It is great for differentiation, and for working with students who are not at the same level but want to work together in a group. They love to play Uno, and read a word each time they take a turn. I have a student who has made it from the very first words into the 600’s this way!
