4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is there an arrow under each word in the flash cards?
A: The arrow serves multiple purposes. It reminds teachers to place their index finger on the circle and move it from left to right under the word to lead the student’s eye across the word. The arrow also helps students orient the flash card and helps them remember to read from left to right.

Q: How do I hold the flash cards?
A: Hold the flash card so that it is directly in front of your child at your child’s eye level. When you move your finger across the arrow, make sure that it does not obstruct your child’s view of the word as this distracts attention from the words.

Q: The flash cards don’t print correctly – they go over the edge of the paper?
A: The one-to-a-page and four-to-a-page flash cards need to be printed in landscape. To do this, go to your printer settings and select “landscape” (not portrait).

This is the BEST sight word website out ever. I tried the teaching technique with my child and within 1 week my child was able to identify 10 sight words error free. I followed the techniques exactly as instructed and it really works. We went on vacation for two weeks, while on vacation we did NO sight words. When we got back, I thought I would have to re-teach the words but to my surprise he remembered all 10 without any help. I know the techniques works because he can identify the words anywhere he see them: in books, magazines etc. no matter the letter fonts or size.
Thank you for a great website.

    ADMIN – Hi Squeakie,

We were all delighted to hear the techniques were helpful with teaching your son! Its great that you were asking him to look at the words in lots of different contexts beyond the flash cards. That is going to help him develop a really deep understanding.

Do they print in bubble letter format?

    ADMIN – Hi Becky,

We use a font that has been designed for maximum readability for small children. The flash card generator is not smart enough to let you change from this default font.

Wish these were available in upper-case format too. Upper-case letters seem to be much easier to process for early readers.

    ADMIN – Hi Beth,

Thanks for the feedback! Because most of what children read is in lower-case letters, we believe it is more important to focus on this. But if you like, you can use our Flash Card Creator to make your own cards with upper-case letters!

Could I print 6 per page or 8 per page? Do you have that option?

    ADMIN – Hi Margaret,

If you want smaller flashcards, you can use our Go Fish cards or Memory cards, which come 8 to a page. These are available with the Dolch word lists, the Fry word lists, or a customized list of your own creation.

My pediatrician told me to start working on sight words. Do you have any advice on how to teach a 3-year-old who is in constant motion?

    ADMIN – Hi Rene,

For a very young child like yours, I think establishing a strong foundation for reading is much more important than jumping into reading itself. Please check out our Phonemic Awareness curriculum, which is a Pre-Phonics plan to prepare children for reading. These games and activities, played for just 15 minutes a day (perfect for an active child!), will teach your child to hear the sounds in language and in spoken words, so that later on he will be better prepared for reading and spelling written words.

These are really awesome! Thanks so much for all your hard work and sharing these! Do you happen to have a CURSIVE version for these? My girls have some learning issues and a counselor suggested we do the sight words in cursive. I am having hard time finding resources in Cursive. It would be nice if it was possible to change the font. Thank you again!

    ADMIN – Hi Michelle,

I’m so glad you like our site! We do not currently offer our resources in cursive, but we are always open to suggestions about what new content our users would like to see. Thanks for the feedback!
