1. Overview

The “Color Board” gives your child additional practice counting and recognizing numerals. It also builds skills necessary for basic addition by continuing counting from various numbers on the number line. This activity has three different levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. See the Math Curriculum page for guidance on when to complete each level.

    3. Directions

Print out the Sightwords Phone Dialing Template and place it in front of your child. Write a couple of important numbers (family, 911, close friends, etc.) on sticky notes and stick one on the screen of the phone. Instruct your child to type in the phone number while saying each individual number as she types it.

Roll the die. Instruct your child to count the number of dots on the dice and color in that number of squares on the Color Board.

Adult: [Rolls die] Count the number of dots on the dice!
    Child: One…Two…Three!
Adult: Now color in three squares starting from one! Say the number you are coloring!
Child: One [Child colors in first square]…Two [Colors in second square]…Three [Colors in third square]

Roll the dice again. This time use a different colored crayon and repeat the same process starting at the next number on the color board. For example, if your child ended at 3 last time, he would start coloring from 4 this time.

    Adult: [Rolls die] Child: One…Two
Adult: Now color in two more squares! Say the number you are coloring!
Child: Four [Child colors in fourth square]…Five [Child colors in fifth square]

Continue rolling the die and coloring in the squares until you get to 30. Do not go past 30. If you roll a large number and get past 30, don’t count it and start a new game.
